Angela McDonald: Texts that move us - the dynamics of reading and writing inscriptions in ancient Egypt
The script in ancient Egypt - whether hieroglyphic or cursive - was incredibly flexible. One aspect of this flexibility was orientation. Across history, clever scribes played with textual orientation for specific effects, sometimes moving readers by manipulating their sensibilities, sometimes physically moving them as they read. We'll explore the incredible webs of meaning scribes spun through these textual dynamics.

Campbell Price: ‘Campbell’s Tomb’ and the 26th Dynasty at Giza
Named in honour of the Scottish-born Consul General in Egypt, Patrick Campbell (1779-1857) [rather than the speaker], 'Campbell's Tomb' at Giza is but one of many Saite Period structures, additions and renovations that attest to interest in the site during the First Millennium BCE. This lecture reviews some of that evidence, its colonial interpretation, and a recent find in Derby Museum to paint a picture of priestly activity and research on the Giza Plateau by the ancient Egyptians themselves.
Alan Jeffreys is Vice Chair of the society. He has been involved with Egyptology from his schooldays, first working in the National Museum of Scotland under then curator of Egyptology Cyril Aldred, and continuing his interest ever since. He has visited Egypt many times, was the long-time editor of the Egyptology Scotland newsletter, 'Scottish Pharaonic' and hosts the society's lectures in Edinburgh.
Dr Angela McDonald is an expert in ancient texts and gained her PhD from the University of Oxford, where she was a founding member of the Current Researches in Egyptology conference series. She is Subject Co-ordinator for Egyptology and Classics and Senior Lecturer in Egyptology at the University of Glasgow, where she organises an extensive series of courses and lectures in Egyptology and other aspects of the history of the ancient world. She is a former Chair of Egyptology Scotland, is active in many areas of Egyptology in Scotland's universities, schools and museums and has numerous published books and articles.
Dr Bill Manley is Honorary President of Egyptology Scotland and teaches Egyptology and Coptic at the University of Glasgow. He is also Co-Director (with Dr José-Ramón Pérez-Accino) of Egiptología Complutense, Madrid, and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool. He was formerly Senior Curator for Ancient Egypt at National Museums Scotland, and continues to work with archaeological projects in Egypt. Bill’s publications include How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs (1998, with Mark Collier), Egyptian Hieroglyphs for Complete Beginners (2012) and Egyptian Art (2017).
Dr Campbell Price is Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum, one of the UK’s largest collections of antiquities from the Nile Valley. He studied Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, where he is an Honorary Research Fellow. Campbell is Vice-Chair of Trustees at the Egypt Exploration Society. His most recent book, Golden Mummies of Egypt. Interpreting Identities from the Graeco-Roman Period is out now.
